The Outdoor Adventure programme carefully balances risk and adventure using outdoor adventurous activities to develop self confidence and teamwork. We provide activities where all the children are actively involved throughout the session and guide them to support and encourage each other. By the end of their stay the group will have taken on more responsibility for themselves and that of the group. During the programme we make the most of the fabulous surrounding countryside and aim to give the group an insight into the environment we operate in appropriate for their key stage.
We run our sessions with the challenge by choice idea in mind. What this means is that we won’t make people do any activities they don’t want to because this will have a negative effect. However, our staff are very well trained on how to get the most out of everyone by being patient, skillful and adaptable. We feel by running our sessions in this way every individual will get the most out of the opportunity and really stretch their personal boundaries.
Our outdoor adventure programmes run over 2 or 4 nights and can include a variety of activities. We are also able to deliver standalone sessions. These activities can include:
Night Navigation Challenge & Orienteering
This is an orienteering exercise where the group learn about map reading and route planning. To successfully complete the challenge they must work together as a team and navigate their way back from their drop off point or to their next activity. We have a number of routes we use depending on the ability and age of the group and there is always a great sense of achievement when they finish the route. For younger groups we can do orienteering sessions on site or in the adjoining fields.
Ropes Course
We are lucky enough at our Swanage centre to have the second largest ropes course in Europe a short distance away. This is a test of nerves and balance at various heights from just off the ground to 60ft high. There are over 50 different challenges at the course and the session is very much about pushing your own boundaries. Our instructors are trained to offer the support and provide the confidence needed so you can really make the most of the course.
Climbing and Abseiling
Close to our Swanage centre is the magnificent Dancing Ledge venue with stunning scenery and challenging climbs this is the perfect place to try out rock climbing on real rock. Climbing is very much about achieving personal goals, but good teamwork is also vital, we get the whole group involved as much as possible be it doing the belaying under our supervision or helping others find that elusive hand hold.
We also have a newly renovated climbing and abseil tower on site which can be the perfect introduction to the sport.
Archery
Archery is a sport that all ages love, throw in a few balloons on the target and they’ll be entertained for ages. We teach them the basics and then get on with shooting some arrows before introducing some games. We are one of the few centres that teach Clout archery which dates back hundreds of years.
Team Building & Pioneering
At the core of any residential experience is the bonds and friendships that are made while spending time together away from home. We offer a wide range of exercises to help groups improve their problem solving and communication skills in a fun and entertaining way. These range from simple tasks to building a bridge over a swimming pool!
Overnight Bivi, Bush Craft and Survival Skills
With the likes of Ray Mears and Bear Grylls on our TVs Bush Craft is currently going through something of resurgence. We have some very knowledgeable staff on our team who can really bring this subject to life. Things covered include how to build shelters from what you can find, to what plants are edible.
For those groups feeling really adventurous we run overnight sessions in local woods. The group will have to orienteer their way over to the site and once there they will need to build their own overnight shelter with the equipment provided. Once they have done this they will be feeling hungry so its then time to cook their dinner on a campfire. This can be one of the most rewarding activities there is and gives a real sense of adventure.
Evening activities
Every evening we run a variety of sessions which gives the group a chance to relax and reminisce about the days events. These can include a disco, murder mystery and an on site campfire.
